Visit to Royal Selangor

On the 25 October 2016 , the IEM UNMC Student Section has organised an industrial visit to Royal Selangor Malaysia. The visit is aimed to expose our engineering students to the largest Pewter manufacturer and Royal Selangor is selected due to its good reputation.

Arduroller Line Following Robotic Competition 2016

The Arduroller Competition was held on the 26th March 2016 at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. The event is separated into two stages whereby the morning session is started with the presentation followed by the afternoon session of line following track race. A total of 6 teams (30 students) joined the event. The event was a huge success with the team “RollsRoys” winning both the presentation session and the track race. Team “RollsRoys” managed to complete the track race with a time of 1 minute 33 seconds. However, the other teams failed to complete the track race.

There was a few technical problem arise, they included malfunction of the auto calibration line sensor module which failed to detect between the contrast of the track as the module keeps entering calibration mode. Hence, some teams were not able to complete the race. One reason for such cased may be caused by incorrect methods of coding.

A black line track was provided by the organizing committee to allow the participants to compete. The winner for the track race is chosen based on the shortest time provided that the team’s robot unit is able to complete the whole course of the track.

Conclusion

The competition ended successfully with the prize giving ceremony by IEM Club Advisor, Dr. Hii Ching Lik. Team “RollsRoys” was awarded the winner for both presentation stage and track race session. Ultimately, this event was a success thanks to the sponsorship and contribution from the engineering faculty as well as CYTRON technologies.

All teams were able to learn more on Arduino Programming as well as being able to fabricate their robotic model while taking into account of cost saving method and engineering design and concepts. This event provided the students a platform to showcase their talents and build team work among team members.

Many thanks to CYTRON technologies for sponsoring the event with several electronic components including the 2AMP motor shield, Auto Calibrating Line Sensor Module and CT-UNO Microboard Processor. Without their support and contribution, this event would not be able to run smoothly.

Visit to SMART

On the 17 March 2016, the IEM UNMC Student Section has organised an industrial visit to SMART. The visit is aimed to enable our engineering students to gain more information about the famous storm water management tunnel in Malaysia.

Mission and vision

The purpose of organising this trip is to increase the industrial exposure of the engineering students. This allows them to have a better understanding about the real working environment. Besides, they are able to visit the control centre of the SMART tunnel which enables the participants to understand the coordination of the tunnel.

Objectives achieved

After the visit, the participants have gained knowledge about the functions and the systems of the SMART Tunnel. Besides, participants also briefly understand the whole construction process of this tunnel.

Activities Summary

8.45am-9.00am – Gathering at the SA bus stop

All the participants gathered at the SA bus stop and filled up the disclaimer form before departing. Later on, the participants depart to the SMART control centre by the appointed bus.

9.15am-10.30am – Arrival to SMART

After more than an hour of journey, the bus reached the SMART control centre. The bus was parked at the designated car park and students head towards the entrance of the control centre. Later, the person in charge led us into a small theatre room.

10.30am-11.15am – Presentation Video

All participants were seated in the theatre and the person in charge gave us a brief introduction about the company. After that, a presentation video is played. The video includes the initial plan to control the flood problem in Kuala Lumpur. It also includes the construction processes and operation of the tunnel when the water level is high. Basically, the tunnel involves water flowing from Kuala Lumpur City Centre to several reservoirs nearby. The tunnel is also dual purpose, whereby the tunnel enables light vehicles to travel. The construction process of the SMART tunnel involves many massive types of machinery such as tunnel boring machine. The total cost to build the tunnel was RM 1.9b and part of the cost is covered by MMC-Gamuda while the others were covered by the government.

11.15am-11.45am – Q&A session and viewing of control centre

After the presentation, the person in charge raised the curtain behind the projector screen and showed us their control system which is located behind the curtain. Then, we all were given a chance to ask any questions regarding the SMART Tunnel.

11.45am-1.00pm – Departure from SMART

After the Q&A session, a group photo was taken. All the participants proceeded to the entrance of the centre and went into the bus which was parked at the side of the centre. The bus departed and arrived back to campus at 1pm.

Conclusion

This trip does not have any expenses and profit, thus no income and loss from the account. As conclusion, this trip was interesting and beneficial to the engineering students. More industrial trips should be organised in the future.

Yakult Factory Visit

On the 1 February 2016, the IEM UNMC Student Section has organised an industrial visit to Yakult Malaysia. The visit is aimed to expose our engineering students to their actual working environment and Yakult is selected due to its good reputation.

The details of Yakult visit are as follow:

Time: 8.30am-12.45pm

Location: No 276, Jalan Haruan 1, Oakland Industrial Park, 70300 Seremban, Negeri Sembilan

Number of participants: 23

The purpose of organising this trip is to increase the industrial exposure of the engineering students. This allows them to have a better understanding about the real working environment. Besides, they are able to see the main production plant during the tour, which may enhance their knowledge in chemical industry.

After this trip, they have gained the knowledge about the manufacturing of milk cultured drink (Yakult), as well as the working conditions of the engineers in the plant.

9.45am-10.00am – Arrival to Yakult Malaysia

After more than an hour of journey, the bus reached Yakult Malaysia. The bus was parked at the designated car park and students head towards the entrance of the factory.

10.00am-10.45am – Presentation Video

Upon arrival, we met our accompanying lecturer whom travelled there by car. We entered the factory and were lead to a presentation hall with seats by the tour guide. We were briefed about the company’s history and it manufacturing procedure. Basically, the company produces a milk cultured drink which contains prebiotic bacteria. It contains bacteria named Lactobacillus casei Shirota after a Japan Scientist named Minoru Shirota. This factory has 2 types of cultured drink which is Yakult Light and Yakult Ace. The approximated bottles of drinks produced daily are 700,000 bottles and it only operates from 9am-5pm. Besides, every participant was given a sample bottle of the Yakult drink and several souvenirs. At the end, few videos were played showing the advantages of Yakult which can cure illness such as short-intestinal disease.

10.45am-11.15am – Production line tour

After the presentation, the tour guide led us to the production line of the Yakult drink. The production line was isolated from the participants. Thus, participants will only be able to view the production line from a certain distance. Moreover, participants were also not allowed to capture any picture during the production line tour.

11.15am-11.45am – Purchasing merchandises

At the end of the visit, participants were led back to the entrance of the factory. Participants are allowed to purchase fresh Yakult drink and some Yakult merchandises from the counter located at the entrance. After every participant had gotten their items, a group photo was taken.

11.45am-12.45pm – Departure from Yakult

At last, all the participants went into the appointed bus and travelled back to the campus. We arrived at the SA bus stop approximately 12.45pm.

Conclusion

This trip does not have any expenses and profit, thus no income and loss from the account. As conclusion, this trip is interesting and beneficial to the engineering students. More industrial trips should be organised in the future.

Engineering Careers Day

On the 11th November 2015, the event "Engineering Career Fair" is held in the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, organized by Career Advisory Service Team followed by support from IEM UNMC, UNMCRS, IEEE, ICE, IMechE, and IStructE. The event was participated by six companies, namely, Motorola, Accenture, Sunway Groups, AECOM, Shell and MRCB.

 





This event is organized with the aim to allow participants of the event to be more familiar with the industry they might be interested in and its future developments. Students can take this event as an opportunity to apply for internships or any future career opportunities with the companies mentioned. Students will then have a much clearer picture and a good idea what is to be expected when transitioning from university background to a working environment.


The event is divided into 3 parts, the first part is the booth session, followed by speed networking session which goes simultaneously with the booth session, and finally the exclusive dinner session for the company reps, the dean, several invited lecturers and the organizing committee. The detailed description for each session are as follows;


- Booth Session
There will be booths set up by the company with banners and buntings prepared from each perspective booth showcasing what the company is about and what they do. Students will then engage with the company reps at the booth asking question to obtain some idea or insights about what the company do. If the student seem to be interested, he or she can then submit their CVs or resumes for the company rep either for an internship position or future career opportunities.

- Speed Networking Session
Speed Networking session was held separately in the Great Hall where the students will take their turns according to the time slot given, to have the chance to network with the company representative inside the Great Hall. There were several booth inside the Great hall where each booth will contain around 6-7 students followed by the 1- 4 company representatives. During this session, active Q&A sessions were engaged between the students and the company representative. The aim of this session is to allow students to have a greater idea and greater understanding from an experienced employee perspective of what the working environment is like, their experiences, along with some insights regarding the engineering industry.

On the day of the event itself, the infrastructure team has prepared the general layout of the booth session, at the ground floor of the Trent Building, and the Great Hall. All the electrical systems, PA systems were prepared for the event.

Roughly around 2.00pm, the company representatives arrives. They received guidance from the Public Relation Teams to show the way around the campus and lead them to the Trent Building to allow them start preparing their materials and props at their booth. At 3.00pm, as the company reps were done preparing setting up each perspective booth, the students are starting to come in and the booth session was officially began.

In the Great Hall, about 3.45pm, the Opening Ceremony begins with the arrival of the dean, Professor Ian Harrison, Careers Advisory Head, Ms Alicia, Student Experience Head, Ms Mavis, along with the company representatives from each company followed by the first batch of students for the speed networking session. The Emcee begins an introduction and invites the dean to give a Welcoming speech. After the speech is done, Certificate Presentation Ceremony begins with the Dean and the Head of Careers Advisory Team, Ms Alicia presenting the certificates to the company reps as an appreciation gift for their participation towards this event.

As the opening ceremony ends, the speed networking session begins, with batch after batch of students coming in for their turn to have their chance to network with their chosen company representative. Each batch are given a 15mins time allowance. Meanwhile, in the Trent Building Ground Floor, the booth session is ongoing answering any questions that the students might have regarding the company plus collection of CVs presented to the company reps by the students to consider an internship placement or potential employment in the future.

At 6.00pm, the exclusive dinner session begins as the last event for the Engineering Career Fair. Food were prepared, chairs were arranged, and this is the time where the organizing committee got a chance to network with the company reps. There were also musical performance prepared during the dinner session showing musical talents from UNMC.
